The Flatiron School, founded in 2012, provides web and mobile software development education through adult programs and high school curricula. Its adult program places graduates at technology companies including Google, Intel, and The New York Times. In 2013 the school began teaching high school students using the same curriculum it uses for adults. It has partnered with DoSomething.org to offer scholarships for teens and worked with Teach for America to give teachers tools for instructing students in computer programming. The company is expanding its high school programming this summer with partners such as Dalton (NYC), Marymount (LA), Palmer Trinity (Miami), Techstars in Austin and 1871 in Chicago. Following the raise, the company plans to grow nationwide and invest in infrastructure. Flatiron School runs intense 12-week full-time bootcamps (iOS and Ruby) with roughly 150 hours of pre-work and daily 9 AM–6 PM instruction. The school reports about a 98% placement rate into paid development jobs and says everyone placed has seen starting salaries of at least $70,000. In the past 18 months Flatiron enrolled about 250 full-time students and accepts roughly 10% of applicants, signaling a highly selective model. Tuition is $12,000 per course, with a $4,000 refund if a student accepts a job through Flatiron’s placement program; employer hires generate finder’s fees. Flatiron partners with New York City on a fellowship that fully covers tuition for applicants earning under $50,000; 26 of the school’s ~150 alumni attended via that fellowship. The school raised capital to prioritize measured, quality-driven growth rather than rapid enrollment expansion.
