Overview
Flattr operates a micropayments platform that lets users allocate a monthly budget to pay publishers; its original product required users to click a “Flattr” button to tip content. In partnership with AdBlock Plus it helped create Flattr Plus, a beta product that automatically tracks browsing activity and distributes users' budgets to publishers based on measured engagement. The teams are experimenting with engagement signals such as time spent and scroll activity and plan a full launch later this year. Publishers must sign up to receive payments, and AdBlock Plus will report how much they could have earned rather than holding the money. The partners aim to generate roughly $500 million in revenue for publishers next year, leveraging AdBlock Plus’s large user base. Flattr’s CEO Till Faida is publicly discussing the product (an interview at Disrupt NY was planned). Flattr is a Malmö, Sweden-based social micro-payment system founded in 2007 by Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi. It allows content owners—bloggers, developers and other creators—to attach and accept micro donations through a button on their website. The company raised €1.6M in funding. Backers included Passion Capital and Federico Pirzio-Biroli. Flattr intends to use the capital to improve its service, grow its user base with a focus on Europe (Germany, UK and Sweden) and build the team.
