Overview
Flipdish is a Dublin-based online ordering and digital experience platform that enables hospitality businesses to deliver digital consumer experiences. Founded in 2015 by brothers Conor and James McCarthy, the company provides QR code order & pay at table, online ordering for collection & delivery, self-service kiosks, customer loyalty and digital marketing technology. Flipdish operates in 25 countries and serves thousands of independent restaurants as well as international brands and ghost-kitchen partners. It raised c.$100m at a valuation of over $1.25 billion and intends to use the funds to grow global operations and fund R&D to improve the hospitality digital experience. The company also plans to support new customer types such as cinemas, stadia and airports and to hire about 700 people in 2022, primarily for technology roles. Flipdish previously received a $48.5m investment from Tiger Global Management in February 2021. Flipdish provides restaurants, cafes and takeaways with a digital ordering and marketing platform to build brands, grow profits and turn customers into regulars. Founded in 2015 by brothers Conor and James McCarthy and based in Dublin, it operates in 15 countries including Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, the UK and the US. The company supplies technology to thousands of independent restaurants as well as major brands such as Yamamori, Wowburger, Sprout & Co, Base Pizza, Romayos, Dunnes Stores and Eddie Rockets. Flipdish raised €40M in funding from Tiger Global Management. The company intends to use the funds to grow its international presence, continue building its product for restaurant partners and attract new customers from independents to large food chains. In December it announced plans to create 300 jobs over the next 12 months, primarily in technology roles and customer-facing functions. Flipdish provides an online ordering and loyalty platform for takeaways and restaurants, including automated re-marketing and retention features to help merchants compete with aggregators. The product lets individual restaurants and chains accept orders directly from customers with lower costs and greater control over the customer experience. Flipdish charges a fee per order rather than a subscription, aligning its revenue with customers' order volumes. The company says revenue grew more than 3x year-over-year compared to 2017, currently powers over one thousand restaurants across Europe and has enabled more than €25 million in online orders to date. Management positions the service as an alternative to telephone ordering and to marketplaces like Just Eat and Deliveroo, and cites competitors in the space such as Olo and ChowNow. Flipdish plans to use new funding to build out its product line and deliver greater service to its expanding worldwide customer base. Flipdish designs, builds and operates own‑label food ordering apps and websites that can be branded under each client's name and provide data on customer interactions and behaviours. More than 500 stores in Ireland and 100 UK stores use the Flipdish platform; clients include Freshly Chopped, Centra and Londis. Founded in 2015 by brothers Conor and James McCarthy, the company grew staff from eight to 20 in the last 12 months and plans to hire a further 10 employees. Financially, Flipdish's operating company Prandium Limited booked a loss of €146,000 in the year to March 2017, had a debtor book of €48,000 and closed the year with net assets of €249,000. The company has previously raised more than €700,000 since launching (including support from Enterprise Ireland and Growing Capital). Flipdish says it will use new funding to improve the existing product and to extend its offering into six additional European countries. FlipDish sells white-label apps and website platforms targeted at restaurants and takeaways. The company was established by James and Conor McCarthy. In January it raised €250,000 from Growing Capital, Gianni Matera’s investment partners, with matched funding from Enterprise Ireland. The funding came via Growing Capital, a seed and early-stage investment firm Matera founded in 2015. The article notes Matera intended to plough €4m into Irish startups by 2020 and has invested in eleven companies to date. No operating metrics or valuation were disclosed in the article.
