Overview

FluidInfo develops FluidDB, a writable shared database designed to store tagged metadata in one repository so applications and users can add, combine, and query related data in flexible, unanticipated ways. Founder Terry Jones demonstrated use cases such as Tickery (comparing Twitter follower overlaps) and integrations with TunkRank, Wemet.at, and CrunchBase to show cross-source mashups. The system includes a flexible permission model and Jones says FluidDB has been written to be intentionally simple; the company plans to open-source the code to build developer confidence. Privacy and security concerns were raised during demos and Q&A, which Jones and others addressed by highlighting permissions and simplicity. Financially, Jones announced a new $800,000 seed round from betaworks, Founder Collective, RRE, Roger Ehrenberg, and Joshua Schachter, after previously raising $540,000 from friends, family, and Esther Dyson. FluidInfo is based in New York.
