Overview
Footbo develops interactive sports sites and applications and operates multiple fantasy-sports properties, including 11Kicks (soccer), 11Rush (American football) and its newly launched 11Runs (fantasy baseball). 11Runs enables fans to play short weekly fantasy baseball competitions for cash prizes and integrates with social networks for signup and sharing. The company said it will release an iPhone application early next week and is working on a custom Android application. Footbo announced an additional $2.5 million investment from Pitango alongside the 11Runs launch; Pitango has now invested about $4.5 million in the startup. Footbo was founded in 2007 by co-founder and CEO Mani Honigstein. The article did not disclose operating metrics such as revenue or user counts. Footbo is a soccer-centric social network that combines standard social features with soccer data, prediction games, and user-generated content. Launched last June, the site has built an international audience of 240,000 across English, Spanish, and German-speaking countries. The platform offers friend connections, groups, messaging, and tools for members to create recreational teams and leagues. Footbo maintains data and statistics from 70 international leagues — scores, standings, and fixtures — and hosts over 50,000 team and player profiles. Users engage via prediction games (integrated into Virgin Media), customized news feeds, subjective grading of team performance, and by adding blogs and wiki pages. The site has implemented Facebook Connect, is developing widgets to increase exposure, and competes with soccer sites including ESPN’s Soccernet.
