Overview
Frame.io is a cloud video collaboration platform that centralizes media assets such as dailies, scripts, storyboards and work-in-progress while providing frame-accurate feedback, annotations, and real-time approvals. The platform integrates with non-linear editing systems including Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid, Apple Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci Resolve to allow direct uploads and streamlined sharing. Frame.io reports over one million active customers, roughly 17,000 of which are paying accounts; pricing starts at $19/month for individuals with team and enterprise tiers available. The company says customers gain efficiency—60% more efficient, 41% more likely to hit deadlines, and producing 39% more videos per month on average. Frame.io has been ramping up security (TPN compliance, SOC 2 Type II, a peer-reviewed security research paper, and a CSO security award). It is pursuing product expansion and a “camera to cloud” initiative, including planned new products, and an L.A. office and showroom focused on motion picture and television production. Frame.io provides a cloud-based collaboration platform that lets editors, producers, directors and external stakeholders comment on, mark up, and share video for review. The product emphasizes quick shareability via web links and includes an iPhone app (an Apple Design Award winner) used by producers and directors to give feedback on the go. In the past year the company released a fully featured enterprise product focused on security, identity-based access, and customizable groups; that enterprise tier is priced at $25 per seat with higher-priced storage options available. Frame.io says 70% of its business comes from self-serve users and the rest from larger clients such as Turner Broadcasting, Vice, Spotify, BuzzFeed and Funny or Die. The company reports 370,000 users signed up and more than 700,000 videos uploaded each month; the team has grown to 40 people. Leadership has signaled a long-term goal to become the “Slack of video” and plans to double down on professional freelance video makers while investing further in security to win studio-level customers. Frame.io provides a cloud collaboration platform that lets video creators upload footage, organize clips into storyboards, and share time-stamped, threaded comments and annotations for editing feedback. The service supports 150 file formats, aiming to replace fragmented workflows using Dropbox, Vimeo and email. Early traction included $30K in MRR within the first 90 days and a $2.2M seed round from Accel. The company won an Apple Design Award for its iPhone app and has attracted enterprise customers such as Facebook, Snapchat, PayPal and TechCrunch's video team. Frame.io says 40% of its customers weren’t creating video five years ago, which it cites as a driver of fast adoption. The product is positioned as an "InVision or GitHub for video," serving both creative and corporate video teams. Frame.io provides a browser-based workflow for media review and collaboration: users can upload video, photo and audio files, view them in-browser, compare versions, leave time-stamped annotations and comments, and draw directly on media. The product addresses shortcomings of ad-hoc sharing via Dropbox, YouTube or Vimeo by offering integrated review tools and connectors to production apps; the company has already built a desktop app that connects with Final Cut Pro. Since launching earlier this year, Frame.io has been used by more than 26,000 businesses and lists customers including Facebook, Nike, Yale University, Refinery29 and the BBC. The team is currently nine people. Co-founder and CEO Emery Wells built the product from his experience in video post-production. The new funding is intended to grow the team and develop the “connective tissue” between media production tools rather than a standalone product.
