FreedomFi develops open-source software and Web3 protocol interfaces that enable crowd-sourced deployments of 5G small cell networks. Its software uses cryptocurrency incentives so consumers can deploy 5G-ready hotspots and earn rewards; the company launched the world's first consumer-deployable cellular base station in partnership with the Helium blockchain. FreedomFi has certified Baicells small cell products for plug-and-play compatibility and announced a deal with Bobcat to enable 5G-ready hotspots. The company contributes most of its code to the Magma open-source project governed by the Linux Foundation. FreedomFi is venture-backed and in March 2022 closed a $9.5 million Series A. It plans to use the funds to accelerate software development and forge partnerships with telecom equipment manufacturers, operators, and other ecosystem players.
