Frontback is an iPhone app that creates composite images by combining photos taken with the front and rear cameras. Launched in August, the app reached roughly 300,000 downloads on minimal marketing and has been noted by high-profile users. Recent feature updates add address-book connections, sharing to Tumblr/email/SMS, a personalized feed with captions and staff picks, image-flip and camera-direction controls, and an offline restore feature. The team has focused on design and plans eventual iPad and Android apps to help scale. The company relocated to San Francisco after initial activity in New York and origins in Belgium. Financially, Frontback closed a new round of funding of around $3 million following an earlier $910,000 seed round in June 2012.
