Fukushima SiC Applied Engineering
Naraha, Fukushima, Japan
Overview
Fukushima SiC Applied Engineering has developed an ultra‑compact, multi‑port neutron radiation cancer treatment system using proprietary SiC device technologies for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The system is significantly more compact and lower cost than existing BNCT systems and is described as capable of targeting deep‑seated cancers and metastatic microtumors with tumor‑cell destruction comparable to heavy particle beam therapy. The company has completed development and manufacturing of its SiC‑BNCT clinical trial machine with six neutron sources and expects to start clinical trials at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine next year. Development has been funded in part by a Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry subsidy program for areas recovering from the 2011 tsunami and nuclear disasters. The company also develops power electronics products using SiC semiconductors and aims to promote SiC adoption while contributing to regional recovery. It recently raised USD 30 million (JPY 3.1 billion) in Series C funding to support these activities.
