Overview

Fusion-io develops flash-based memory chips and storage technologies designed to deliver very high data-access speeds and to store data in smaller devices. The company's core product is a flash-based memory tier used to accelerate storage performance. It is known for providing an incredibly fast data storage solution. Fusion-io said it will use new funding to increase sales and to develop its flash-based memory tier further. The company also plans to support product development of new technologies. The latest financing brings its total funding to over $110 million. Fusion-io develops high-speed storage technology built around flash memory chips rather than traditional hard drives, allowing customers to store large amounts of data with less hardware and much higher access speeds. Its first product, the ioDrive, debuted at DEMOfall 2007 and the ioSAN, which connects ioDrive performance to a company network, was announced at DEMOfall 2008. The company demonstrated ioSAN transferring a DVD’s worth of data across servers in three seconds. Fusion-io announced a $47.5 million second round of funding led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, bringing its total funding to $66.5 million. Previous investors New Enterprise Associates, Dell Ventures, and Sumitomo Ventures participated in the new round. The company named David Bradford as CEO (he spent 15 years at Novell and reported to Eric Schmidt in his last three years there), and Apple co‑founder Steve Wozniak joined as chief scientist; Fusion-io reported more than 300 customers.
