Overview
Futurail is a European deep-tech startup founded in 2023 that is developing FUTURAILDriver, a software-centric autonomy stack that can be integrated into new trains or retrofitted onto existing rolling stock. The first commercial focus is depot autonomy, where up to 30 % of drivers’ time is spent on low-speed shunting, allowing operators to reduce driver costs by as much as 80 % and alleviate an impending labour shortage. After depots, the company plans to expand to branch lines and ultimately high-speed mainlines, with initial certification targeted for 2027 and mass production from 2028. Futurail is already testing with customers in Europe and the United States and has strategic partnerships with Lohr Group and Parallel Systems. Participation in a French government-backed consortium will see its software embedded in a new battery-electric train platform. Management claims the solution could shift millions of passengers and tons of freight from road to rail, avoiding more than 10 million tons of CO₂ annually. The company has raised €7.5 million to date, funding that will support team growth, OEM collaborations, and regulatory approvals.
