FutureLearn is a London-based online degree platform that offers around 2,000 courses, spanning short courses, postgraduate diplomas and fully online degrees. The platform launched its first courses in fall 2013 and has attracted more than nine million cumulative learners. It partners with six UK universities for full degrees and works with organisations including Accenture, the British Council, CIPD, Raspberry Pi and Health Education England. FutureLearn is also involved in UK government-backed skills initiatives such as The Institute of Coding and the National Centre for Computing Education. With the new investment it plans to build a portfolio of micro-credentials, broaden its range of flexible online degrees, develop more courses and enhance support for international partners to extend global reach. The Open University previously wholly owned the platform and will retain a 50% stake after the deal.
