Overview
GAIA designs and sells higher-end furniture online and through showrooms, targeting Mexico’s growing middle and upper-middle class. The company began as an online retailer and has expanded to 15 showrooms in Monterrey, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Puebla and Querétaro. GAIA plans to use new capital to add online features such as interior design consultations, curated looks, and in-home product visualizations, and to increase sales and marketing. The company also aims to support small and medium-sized Mexican furniture producers with financial products, training, revenue-management tools and educational offerings. Management says the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated digital adoption among Mexican consumers, and GAIA is positioning itself to capture that shift. The broader e-commerce market in Mexico was estimated at $22.6 billion in 2019 and expected to grow ~12.6% annually, a backdrop GAIA cites for its expansion. GAIA Design is an online furniture retailer that launched in October 2014 to serve Mexico’s middle and upper middle class with moderately priced designs. The company sells items typically priced between $100 and $500, with best sellers including end tables and chairs. Since launch it has generated $4 million in revenue from 7,000 orders. The founders — Raffaello Starace, Hassan Yassine, and Philippe Cahuzac — initially met while working at Brazilian furniture startup Oppa and chose Mexico as a target emerging market. The company positions its products as more affordable than U.S. players like West Elm or Crate and Barrel, while differentiating from low-cost retailers such as IKEA.
