Overview

GAIN Fitness debuted in 2009 to put a professional trainer in every pocket, offering personalized fitness routines via mobile apps. The company has launched tracking apps for a wide range of activities, from weight training to Pilates, and aims to unbundle fitness classes and become a marketplace for fitness trainers and workout plans. GAIN recently surpassed one million downloads. Earlier it raised just under $1 million in seed funding from investors including Keith Rabois, Ben Ling and InterWest Partners. A recent SEC filing shows GAIN raised an additional $2.1M in venture funding led by InterWest with contributions from existing investors. CEO Nick Gammell said the new capital will support major product and business changes to its apps and fitness marketplace, with further details expected in the coming months. GAIN Fitness delivers personalized workouts based on certified trainers' expertise through iOS and web apps. Founded by former Googlers and led by CEO Nick Gammell, the company launched its iPhone app in July and later relaunched it as a free app after user pushback against a paid model. The platform offers more than 700 exercises and custom-tailored workouts, and users access routines on the go via mobile. Since the free app launch, users use GAIN’s workout building and tracking tools 4–5 times more per user compared to the web app, and about 40% of sessions are now occurring on mobile. The service reports more than 600K users. With new funding, GAIN plans a January v3.0 iOS release to add a marketplace where professional trainers can design and sell fitness multimedia "packs," and an Android app is also planned. Gain Fitness (formerly eFitPlan) offers a Quick Workout generator that produces randomized but scientifically grounded workouts customizable by experience level and available equipment. The product targets regular exercisers who train two to five times per week and estimates a U.S. addressable demographic of roughly 50–60 million people. Founders Nick Gammell (a former Google and YouTube employee and ex‑college football player) and Sam Morrell (a certified personal trainer) lead the company. Gammell brings a quantitative background as a former financial data analyst at Google and uses the product himself. Future product plans discussed include public profiles, workout sharing, social challenges, and broader interoperability with other fitness apps for sharing food diaries and workout plans. The company presented at the Quantified Self workshop and highlights advisor involvement from Google executive Ben Ling.
