Gakko runs short, project-based summer camps and mentor-guided learning experiences that aim to make learning feel "magical" and camp-like. The company began with a two-week summer program for 40 high school–aged students and has since hosted camps in France, Romania, Bali and the U.S., drawing campers from more than 60 countries. Each two-week camp session costs about $3,500 (scholarships available), and Gakko emphasizes cross-cultural collaboration and mentorship from professionals rather than traditional educators. Founder Kenta Koga, a Yale computer science graduate who has worked in product development and as a professional magician, positions the programs around hands-on projects like building apps, songwriting and filmmaking. Gakko is expanding beyond seasonal camps into year-round international learning centers and after-school programs, with a pilot learning center scheduled to start in Manhattan’s SoHo that will begin with a 10-student pilot pairing learners with professional mentors. Financially, the company recently raised seed funding and has raised nearly $7.5 million in total to date.
