Overview
GameSalad, formerly Gendai Games, offers a game-creation tool that lets non-programmers build, develop and publish 2D casual games for the iPhone and iPad. The platform enables developers to design, publish and distribute original games for iPhone, iPad, Mac and the Web without writing code. To date it has been used to create over 8,500 titles in the iTunes App Store, including more than 30 top-100 U.S. games. The company raised $6.1 million in new funding to expand its technical and product teams and further develop its game-creation technology. GameSalad is currently based in Austin and is planning a move to San Francisco in the next few months. GameSalad offers GameSalad Studio, a suite that combines GameSalad Creator, GameSalad Viewer, and GameSalad Direct to let users create, test, and distribute iPhone/iOS games without programming knowledge. Users pay no fees until they publish; submission carries a small fee, free games incur no extra fee, and paid games require a revenue split. The company provides analytics so developers can track how their games perform on the App Store, and it launched GameSalad Accelerator to connect top-performing makers with brands and developer-targeted services. GameSalad, previously known as Gendai Games, is based in Austin, Texas. The company appointed Frank Coppersmith as chief operating officer reporting to CEO Michael Agustin. GameSalad raised $1 million earlier this year from DFJ Mercury, Steamboat Ventures, DFJ Frontier and ff Asset Management. It competes with higher-end 3D tools such as Unity Technologies.
