Overview

Gatsby is an open-source web development framework that uses JavaScript, React, and GraphQL to let developers build customizable, high-performance websites and web apps. Its commercial product, Gatsby Cloud (launched in 2019), provides collaboration tools and optimizations such as Incremental Builds that can deploy changes in under ten seconds. The framework offers over 2,000 plugins and is supported by a community of more than 3,300 contributors and over 200,000 sites on GitHub; the developer community is growing over 10% month-over-month. Gatsby says sites built with the framework load up to 10x faster than traditional database-backed sites and are pre-rendered to static pages on a global CDN, improving scalability and lowering hosting costs. The company reports strong commercial traction—Gatsby Cloud doubled its customer base in the past month—and adoption among Fortune 500 companies and brands like ButcherBox, Capital One, DraftKings, IBM, Impossible Foods, and Little Caesars. Management says the new funding will be used to expand product capabilities and continue making product announcements at events such as its upcoming Virtual Gatsby Days. Gatsby is built on the open-source GatsbyJS project and provides a modern web development platform and hosted service for building and deploying sites. The company combines React and GraphQL-based tooling with a headless-CMS approach so content creators can continue using systems like WordPress or Drupal while delivering a modern presentation layer. Gatsby says about 1% of the top 10,000 websites use its platform and counts customers including IBM, PayPal, Braun, Airbnb, and Impossible Burger. The open-source project has attracted more than 2,500 contributors, and the company reports it contributes roughly $3 million per year to core tools and the plugin ecosystem. Gatsby monetizes via a hosted service with pricing starting at $50/month for a single site. The company launched in 2015 and positions itself as a comprehensive platform to help teams move from legacy stacks to modern web architectures.
