Overview
Gigaom is a media company and blog focused on covering and analyzing emerging technologies. It provides insights on disruptive companies, people and trends and organizes events. The company operates via a network of more than 200 independent analysts. Founded in 2006 by Om Malik, Malik is stepping down as a contributing writer to become a partner with True Ventures. Paul Walborsky is the CEO. The company says it will use the new funds to continue to grow. GigaOm (Giga Omni Media) is a tech blog and research startup. The company operates a research arm that now has more than 20,000 subscribers. Ten of its 41 employees work on research full time, and founder Om Malik says the number of research employees will grow rapidly. GigaOm had previously raised $8.33 million and has just added another $6 million to fund growth. The new capital is intended to fuel expansion of the research business. Sources told TechCrunch the company’s valuation was over $40 million, though GigaOm declined to comment on valuation. Giga Omni Media operates the technology news blog network GigaOm, with its flagship GigaOm blog producing technology journalism and editorial content. The company’s core product is online tech publishing and related editorial services. A TechCrunch report cites an SEC filing showing a fresh $2.5 million raise, bringing total capital raised to $8.33 million. The new capital injection comes from Alloy Ventures and True Ventures (where founder Om Malik is a partner). The company’s most recent prior financing amounted to roughly $4.5 million and closed over two years ago. The report notes recent editorial departures and suggests the company may use funds for growth or acquisitions of smaller blogs. GigaOm is Om Malik’s blog network and one of the early blog networks to raise institutional capital. The company has pursued aggressive expansion and software development according to its leadership. Management said the new funding will also serve as a nest egg for troubled financial times ahead. The company recently promoted Paul Walborsky to CEO. This financing follows prior investment and brings total capital raised to $5.3 million. The round joins other blog networks that have sought outside funding.
