GoingOn provides an on-demand platform that enables colleges and universities to build private social networks integrated with existing LMS and SIS systems. The product offers Facebook-style messaging, community and group creation, academic profiles and portfolios, content publishing via Drupal, and feed aggregation from campus systems. The company has moved toward a stream-based academic engagement network, integrating technologies such as Hadoop, Cassandra, Hive, Pig, ZooKeeper and others under new CTO Taneli Otala. GoingOn emphasizes semantic stream analysis and a "knowledge cloud" to drive recommendations and route relevant academic content to users. The platform is serving more than 25 institutions and operates on a subscription model with monthly plans starting at $1K and up, priced by active users. The startup was angel-funded until it raised $7 million earlier this year from outside investors.
