Overview

WaveSense develops Ground Positioning Radar (GPR), an ultra-wide band radar system that maps subsurface signatures to enable precise vehicle localization. Its integrated hardware, software, and systems deliver centimeter-level accuracy where lidar, camera systems, and GPS struggle, including in adverse weather, poor lane markings, parking garages, and unpaved terrain. The company plans to advance integration of its technology into consumer vehicles through collaborations with major automakers and Tier 1 suppliers to enable features such as hand-free lane keeping and autonomous valet parking. WaveSense raised $15 million in a round led by Rhapsody Venture Partners and Impossible Ventures to accelerate product development and staffing. The company recently demonstrated reliable centimeter-level localization in multiple challenging conditions and is positioning GPR as a complementary sensor for ADAS and autonomous driving. WaveSense has added industry veterans to its board and advisory board, including former Ford Automotive President Joe Hinrichs, former GM CFO Charles "Chuck" K. Stevens III, and former Continental CTO Kurt Lehmann. WaveSense offers navigation based on ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to enable self-driving vehicles to navigate roads safely, precisely and reliably in all conditions. The company creates subterranean maps by scanning up to 10 feet below the roadbed and locking on to unique underground features such as soil layers, rocks and pipes. Its sensor scans the road bedding about 126 times per second and compares the scans to an onboard map to determine exact vehicle position within the lane. The technology has been utilized by the U.S. military and demonstrated accuracy to within a few centimeters at standard highway speeds, including during night-time whiteout snowstorm conditions. WaveSense holds the exclusive worldwide license to use GPR for vehicle localization. The company intends to commercialize its military-proven sensor for the autonomous-vehicle market.
