Grammarly

548 Market Street, #35410, San Francisco, California, 94104, United States

Overview

Grammarly provides AI-driven writing and productivity tools—proofreading, paraphrasing, tone suggestion, AI detection agents and more—that integrate where people work. Following its January 2025 acquisition of Coda, Grammarly combined Coda Docs and Coda Brain to expand capabilities for unlocking company knowledge and building flexible productivity tools. The platform powers AI across more than 500,000 applications and websites and serves over 40 million daily users and 50,000 organizations. Grammarly reports annual revenue of more than $700 million. The company says it will continue investing in product innovation and extend its offering through strategic acquisitions. Executives frame the combined product set as enabling AI agents that function like a thoughtful colleague to transform workflows for individuals and enterprises. Grammarly is an AI-powered writing assistant that provides automated editing and personalized communication feedback across browsers, apps and documents. It operates a freemium model with paid tiers priced at $12, $20 and $30 per month and reports presence across more than 500,000 applications and websites including email clients, enterprise software and word processors. The product relies on natural language processing and machine learning and the company has rolled out Grammarly for Mac and Windows and a Text Editor SDK for developers. Grammarly plans to expand suggested-improvement categories, become more ubiquitous wherever people type, and continue investing in AI, NLP, ML and user-trust measures. The company says it has been cash-flow positive from the very early days. Grammarly will use the new funding to accelerate product innovation and team growth. Grammarly provides an AI-based toolkit used by more than 20 million daily active users to correct grammar, suggest improved phrasing, and moderate tone. Its products are available via browser extensions, a web app, mobile and desktop apps, and integrations like Microsoft Office. The company applies machine learning and natural language processing to continuously refine suggestions and synthesize new styles and phrases. Grammarly operates a freemium subscription model, with paid tiers priced at $11.66, $19.98, and $29.95 per month, and it says the only revenue source is subscriptions; it does not disclose the share of paid users. Founded in 2009 by Alex Shevchenko and Max Lytvyn, with Brad Hoover as longtime CEO, Grammarly has been profitable almost from the start. Looking ahead it plans to expand to more platforms and to build more enterprise-focused tools such as style guides and tone features, while remaining English-only and not moving into audio. Grammarly builds a freemium grammar and writing checker that uses artificial intelligence to help users with grammar, sentence structure and the substance of their writing. It offers a Chrome extension to proofread online documents and a paid tier priced at $11.99 per month for advanced features. The company reports 6.9 million daily active users, most of whom use the free service, and is already profitable. Grammarly competes with built-in spell-checkers from Google and Microsoft and aims to convince customers its offerings are superior. Leadership plans to use new funding to hire more staff and improve the algorithm. The startup is described as eight years old and Ukraine-founded, and its CEO Brad Hoover emphasized the mission of improving how people communicate.
