Overview

Graphite began in 2020 as a mobile development tooling company before pivoting to AI-driven code review. Its platform leverages Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s models to flag errors, suggest code changes from developer comments, summarize code, and generate possible fixes. The product lets customers define patterns unique to their codebases and set filters for sensitive information to reduce reliability and security risks. Graphite says revenue grew 20x in 2024 and that it serves tens of thousands of engineers at more than 500 companies, including Shopify, Snowflake, Figma, and Perplexity. The company made its core code review offering free for teams of all sizes and is spinning out Diamond, an AI tool to catch bugs, as a standalone product. Graphite is a ~30-person startup with an NYC-based team and says the recent growth gives it many years of runway and a clear path to profitability. Graphite began as an internal tool built by founders who previously worked at Facebook, Airbnb and Square and pivoted from a mobile-development focus to concentrate exclusively on its code-review product. The company offers an open-source command-line interface and a dashboard designed to let developers queue and continue work concurrently while reviews proceed. Co-founder and CEO Merrill Lutsky and co-founder Tomas Reimers lead a small team of six (including three founders) and plan to grow to 15–20 employees by the end of the year. The company has an active community with more than 2,500 users participating in its Slack community. Hiring efforts emphasize diversity through recruiting agencies and outreach. Graphite recently closed a $20 million Series A to support product development and hiring.
