Great Basin Corporation develops sample-to-result, chip-based molecular diagnostic platforms and assays for infectious diseases. Its first FDA-cleared product is a molecular diagnostic test for toxigenic Clostridium difficile, and the company launched sales of the platform in November 2012. Great Basin's system provides information-rich, multiplexed detection intended to deliver more diagnostic data per sample and to enable faster, more precise treatment decisions at lower cost. The company plans to expand its product menu and commercial footprint, pursue three clinical trials over the next 12 months, and develop a next-generation Portrait Analyzer. It recently raised $9.5 million in Series B financing led by returning private investors to expand manufacturing, fund R&D (including menu expansion and the Portrait Analyzer), and grow global commercialization. Management reports sales are already ahead of plan, and the platform targets use in CLIA-waived or moderately complex labs to reduce hospital stays and healthcare costs.
