Overview
Groopie is an iPhone social video app that enables vloggers to create TV-style shows together, supporting both scripted and unscripted content. Its core feature is real-time synchronization—merging simultaneous recordings from multiple users and allowing selection of camera angles and audio sources—rather than traditional shot-by-shot stitching. The app supports flipping between front and back cameras and includes built-in editing to produce one continuous episode. Users have profiles that feature shows (each with unlimited episodes) and shows can be shared to Facebook and Twitter but are deliberately not published to YouTube. Groopie has run a six-month private beta with 100 testers (the Apple limit), including about a dozen YouTubers and a few reality-TV personalities; example content includes a kid-hosted series that reached 21 episodes. The L.A. and San Francisco-based startup was founded by Fuad Hawit and is backed by $350,000 from unnamed Zynga, PayPal and Apple angel investors and others; the app is free on iTunes and described as still rough around the edges.
