Grouphug

630 Boulevard René-Lévesque O, Montréal, QC, H3B 1S6, CA

Overview

Grouphug is a stealth-mode consumer startup that currently generates memes from the archive text of group WhatsApp chats. Users export chat text and the app creates humorous images based on the conversation content; the feature is presented as a taster to acquire beta users. Founders include Felix Petersen (creator of Amen and Plazes), Joseph Djenandji (recently exited travel brand LostIn) and Matthew Balazsi (with a decade of AI/ML experience). Petersen says the team plans to build a broader platform to extract more value from private WhatsApp groups using generative AI and that they believe they’ve “cracked AI humor.” The product today focuses on joke and meme generation but is positioned as the first step toward richer, private-group AI features. Financially, the company has completed a pre-seed raise to fund early development and growth while remaining in stealth.
