Overview
Grove Collaborative develops and sells natural, sustainable home and personal care products under its Grove Collaborative, Seedling by Grove, Rooted Beauty, Honu and Sustain brands and curates third-party natural brands. The company operates a flexible scheduled delivery model and assigns each customer a Grove Guide — a personalized concierge who answers questions via chat, email, text and phone. Grove says it has grown more than sixfold over the past two years, that 50% of its customers are trying natural home and personal care for the first time, and that nearly 50,000 customers interact with Grove Guides each week. The company plans to use new capital to expand into the clean beauty category, invest in sustainable packaging and supply chain initiatives (targeting nearly 1,000,000 pounds of plastic savings in 2019), and to double the Grove Guide team by adding more than 100 employees. Financially, Grove has raised more than $250 million to date and its latest financing values the company at more than $1 billion. Launched in 2016 and based in San Francisco, Grove is focused on scaling sustainable consumer products. Grove Collaborative operates an online distribution channel for natural cleaning and personal-care brands and its own Grove-branded products. The company pivoted to online retail in 2016 after launching in 2014 and focuses on prompting customers to re-order at the right time. Grove carries third-party natural brands like Method and Mrs. Meyer’s and has begun expanding its own product line into items such as hand sanitizer, essential oils, moisturizers and natural sponges. Leadership says the business has generated “tens of millions of dollars” in revenue and serves “hundreds of thousands” of active customers, with more than half of those customers having never shopped natural before. Grove plans to primarily use new funding to scale marketing—largely via influencers such as health bloggers and YouTube personalities—and to build out additional Grove product offerings. ePantry is an online grocery service that automatically ships sustainable household goods and is expanding into personal care on a recurring schedule. The company aims to make greener product choices more convenient by predicting when customers will run out and delivering items before they do. At launch the site offers roughly 400–500 SKUs across brands such as Mrs. Meyer’s, Method, Seventh Generation, and others, and it has a partnership with Method. Co‑founder Stuart Landesberg says pricing is sometimes cheaper than grocery stores and the service uses discounts and playful promotions to attract customers. Operational metrics disclosed include shipping 138 orders on one day, an average order size of $45–$47 (about $200–$300 per year per customer), and under 1% attrition among customers who placed second orders. The company plans to grow product selection and increase marketing; it operates with a nine‑person full‑time team in San Francisco.
