Overview
GScan commercialises muon tomography combined with AI to produce detailed 3D imagery of assets’ internal structure and detect defects in materials like concrete and steel. Founded in 2018 by a team of CERN physicists, engineers, and entrepreneurs, the firm says advances in AI and optical solutions have made the decades‑old technology viable for noninvasive inspection. Its first major commercial project scanned through 10 metres of concrete and steel to image two Soviet‑era nuclear submarine reactors in Paldiski, Estonia, achieving accuracies the company says are 30 times better than prior similar efforts. GScan is working on a maiden project with UK National Highways, AtkinsRealis, and Jacobs to assess steel components inside a post‑tensioned concrete bridge, and has been invited to evaluate other ageing nuclear reactors in Europe. The company has launched the SilentBorder initiative to detect narcotics and contraband in shipping containers using muon tomography instead of X‑rays, and is exploring applications in defence, national security, healthcare and space. GScan announced a €3 million seed round from investors including Bolt founder Markus Villig, Japanese corporate venture funds, and existing angel investors. GScan develops atmospheric ray 3D scanners and tomographs that use natural particle flux to scan. The company says its equipment differs from X-ray machines by offering complete automation and high material-recognition capability. Its first product is a security and customs scanner with a two-cubic-metre capacity for packages, vehicles and containers. GScan raised €1.4 million in an investment round led by AS Amalfi, Hansa Grupp OÜ and Sillever OÜ and is now valued at over €18 million. The funding will allow the company to complete R&D and deliver its first industry prototypes by autumn 2022. Management says the scanners can detect weapons, explosives, illegal goods and people, and can be used to inspect buildings and bridges for structural safety.
