Hackruiter

455 Broadway, New York, 10013

Overview

Hackruiter operates Hacker School, an in-person, full-time program (eight hours a day, four days a week for three months) and a recruiter platform that places graduates with startups. The school is free for students and is entering its third batch after initial cohorts of six and 12 students, with 25 places planned for February. Hackruiter is YCombinator-backed and based in New York. The company is already profitable, and co-founder David Albert said it could have raised more than the current round. Its business model currently centers on placement fees: startups such as Tumblr, Weebly, Loopt, Artsy and Bit.ly pay an average of $20K per programmer referral. Co-founder Nicholas Bergson-Shilcock frames the school as an environment to improve already-good coders, and the founders say the school currently pays for itself though they may adjust the model as they scale.
