Handbag Clinic restores and resells luxury handbags for clients worldwide, handling brands such as Hermes, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Gucci. The company restores around 700 bags each month and resells about 300, shifting 90% of purchased stock monthly. Founded in 2013 as a spin-off from the Furniture Clinic by Charlotte Staerck and her husband Ben, it now employs almost 30 people, the majority in the North East. It operates an e-commerce site, stores on King's Road in Chelsea and in Leeds, concessions in Fenwick's in Newcastle and Colchester, and franchises in Europe and the Middle East. The business offers a three-year programme to train staff in restoration techniques. Handbag Clinic is working with Durham University to adapt facial recognition technology to authenticate handbags and assess their condition and value and plans to use new investment to develop technology, expand capacity and strengthen senior management.
