Handy

555 W 18th St Fl 4, New York, NY, 10011, United States

Overview

Handy operates an app-based two-sided marketplace that connects consumers to professionals for on-demand housekeeping and other home services, including furniture delivery and assembly. The company says it launched in 2012 and completed 1 million bookings between launch and June 2015, currently booking about 100,000 jobs per month with “hundreds of thousands” of customers and roughly 10,000 professionals registered. Typical jobs cost about $70 and Handy takes approximately a 20% cut on average; around 80% of weekly bookings come from repeat customers. Handy reports most professionals remain active after 12 months but that the vast majority work less than 20 hours per week. The company plans to invest further in the 28 markets where it already operates, to expand beyond cleaning (which represents about 80% of jobs) and to enter new cities and countries by the end of 2016. It is also transitioning to a fuller online ordering and cancellation platform to improve customer and pro experience while navigating legal challenges around worker classification (two suits over 1099 status). Handybook is an on-demand home cleaning and repair service that connects consumers with professionals for cleaning, plumbing, electrical work, painting, moving, furniture assembly and other tasks. The company was founded in 2012 by Harvard Business School classmates Oisin Hanrahan (CEO) and Umang Dua (COO) and is based in New York City. It launched in Boston and New York and expanded to 26 markets across North America. In January 2014 Handybook acquired Exec, a West Coast on-demand home cleaning and improvement brand. The company closed a $30m Series B and has now raised $49m in total capital. Handybook intends to use the proceeds to build the team and product. Handybook provides an on-demand search and booking marketplace for cleaning and a range of household services, including handyman jobs, plumbing and moving. The service simplifies booking into a three-step flow via web and a newly updated iOS-compatible mobile app. Handybook launched in June of last year and started in New York City; it currently covers eight cities and plans to expand into five more (Dallas, San Diego, Houston, Atlanta and Seattle) to reach 13 markets by month-end. The company has raised a $10M Series A after a prior $2M seed and is using the capital to fund expansion. Operating metrics reported include a user base that doubled month-over-month for four months, consistent double-digit growth in bookings, and thousands of jobs booked each week. Handybook provides an online marketplace that standardizes prices and availability to allow immediate booking and online payment for professional home services. The company spun out of Harvard University’s Innovation Lab earlier the same year and lists Oisin Hanrahan as CEO and Umang Dua as COO. It operates in New York and Boston with a community of about 100 verified service providers, including handymen, housekeepers and painters. Providers undergo background checks, reference checks and in-person interviews, and Handybook offers service-level guarantees. The $2M seed investment will be used to expand the core engineering team, accelerate new platform features, enter additional geographies, and grow its network of professional providers. Investors said the company has seen real transactions early on, reflecting initial marketplace traction.
