Harpoon Medical commercializes a minimally invasive beating-heart mitral valve repair technology that allows surgeons to repair the valve through a small incision between the ribs while the heart is still beating. The device uses image-guided technology and aims to cut typical open‑heart surgery time from 3–6 hours to as little as 60 minutes. The technology was developed in the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and licensed to Harpoon. The company secured a patent for the device and was formed in 2013 specifically to commercialize the university technology. Harpoon has received grants from BioMaryland and TEDCO and says the newly raised funds will support demonstration of the device’s efficacy in the clinic. Bill Niland is the company’s CEO.
