Hatch Africa
Arch 28 Old Union Yard Arches, 229 Union Street, London, England, SE1 0LR, United Kingdom
Overview
Hatch Africa distributes dual-purpose breeds of day-old chicks through a network of agents who rear birds to maturity before selling them to smallholder farmers. Its chickens are designed for backyard conditions; typical customers own 5–20 birds and benefit from faster growth, higher egg production and greater disease resistance compared with indigenous breeds. The company operates under brands including EthioChicken and Uzima Chicken in Ethiopia, Uganda and Rwanda, and Premier/Prestige Poultry in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, with Kenya adopting the Uzima Chicken brand. Founded in 2010, Hatch now reaches 4.6 million rural households across its operating countries. The business plans to scale impact six-fold by 2030, increasing annual chickens sold from 45 million to 340 million and aiming for a one-chicken-per-person-per-year metric in each market. Recent financing will support expansion into Kenya, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire and further roll-out of its distribution model.
