Overview

Healios (operating as Retina Institute Japan) is a biotechnology company focused on commercializing induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell technology to treat refractory retinal diseases. Leveraging patents licensed from the renowned research institute RIKEN, the company is developing the world’s first pharmaceutical iPS-cell–derived retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, addressing an estimated $21 billion global market for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Beyond RPE cells, Healios’ pipeline includes photoreceptor transplantation, broader retinal regenerative medicines, and novel diagnostic methods designed to convert currently untreatable retinal conditions into treatable ones. The company positions itself at the forefront of regenerative medicine and aims to rapidly translate Nobel Prize-winning iPS discoveries into clinical products. A recent strategic investment by Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma (DSP) provides both capital and an exclusive collaboration framework to accelerate development and commercialization. The 1.5 billion JPY equity infusion strengthens Healios’ financial base as it advances toward clinical and commercial milestones.
