HealthTap

270 University Ave, Palo Alto, CA, 94301, United States

Overview

HealthTap operates a mobile and web Q&A platform that links everyday users to more than 38,000 licensed physicians in real time, positioning itself as a “Quora for doctors.” Since launching in 2010 the platform has grown to serve over 7.5 million unique visitors per month and has answered more than 10 million questions (the article also cites the platform as having served over 581 million answers). Doctors on the platform spend an average of 61.2 minutes per session engaging in Q&A, peer review, referrals and reputation-building. The company has not monetized in any significant way yet and plans to open its health data to third parties and pursue partnerships and integrations as primary paths to revenue. HealthTap says it will use new capital to hire talent, expand web and mobile offerings, and accelerate growth, with an eye toward becoming a triage layer in a post‑Obamacare world. HealthTap operates a free online and mobile medical community where anyone can ask health questions and receive answers from top U.S. physicians across about 100 specialties. Participating physicians undergo rigorous background checks verifying medical licenses and good standing to enhance content credibility. Approved physicians receive a free Virtual Practice to answer questions, endorse peers’ answers, and create connections for in-person care. The service launched new mobile and online offerings two months prior to the article and had attracted 6,000 physicians and 500 healthcare institutions, including Cleveland Clinic and The Mount Sinai Hospital. HealthTap was founded by Ron Gutman, who previously founded health information portal Wellsphere. The company intends to use new funding for growth, hiring, and to engage more physicians and patients in the community. HealthTap is currently in private beta and bills itself as an 'Expert Health Companion' operating at the intersection of life science and interactive software. The company aims to bring personalization and interactivity to medicine for both physicians and patients through data and the Internet. HealthTap integrates personalization, game dynamics, and social networking to increase engagement with health and well-being. Founded by Ron Gutman, who previously founded health information portal Wellsphere, the startup is building a network of doctors to create tailored information for its community. HealthTap said it will use new capital in part to grow that network of physicians. The company raised $2.35 million in a convertible note seed financing led by Mohr Davidow Ventures with notable angel participation.
