Overview
Helios developed a proprietary reactor technology intended to extract oxygen (and iron) from lunar regolith to support sustained Moon missions and habitation. While pursuing that goal, its scientists discovered a novel chemical process that extracts 99% pure iron from terrestrial iron ore using about 50% less energy and at much lower temperatures. The method operates at temperatures low enough that a household oven can initiate the process and is being packaged as a module designed for integration into Direct Reduction of Iron (DRI) furnaces. Helios emphasizes frictionless integration to avoid requiring steelmakers to dramatically alter existing processes, which it says will reduce cost and speed adoption. The company will use seed funding to demonstrate the technology at larger, industry-comparable scales and to sign commercial agreements to build pilot plants capable of producing multiple tons of iron per day. Helios is led by founder and CEO Jonathan Geifman and announced the financing from Tel Aviv, Israel.
