Here Be Dragons is an immersive production studio focused on virtual-reality content and expanding into augmented reality. The company closed a $10 million Series A led by Discovery and has a $55 million pre-money valuation. Leadership says the studio has reached profitability and has worked with partners including Nike, Samsung, The New York Times and GE. Proceeds from the round will be used to build out the studio’s divisions, with particular emphasis on creative development. Founded in 2014 as the sister company to VR platform Vrse (now Within), the companies collaborate occasionally but operate independently and share co-founder Chris Milk. The studio is pursuing AR work (including a Comic-Con HoloLens project with FX) and is watching phone-based AR via Apple’s ARKit for future content opportunities.
