Highlighter allows readers to post thoughts directly within the flow of text and to highlight and archive online quotes or paragraphs in a centralized location. The company began as a WordPress plug-in and has recorded more than 7,000 downloads to date. Highlighter is developing a JavaScript version that can be installed on any website via a three-step process, set to be unveiled later this month. It also sees opportunity in electronic books and is rolling out technology to enable social highlighting in e-readers. The company plans to release its own reader apps for Android and iOS within the next six months. Highlighter is a TechStars graduate and recently scored $300,000 in angel financing.
