Overview
Hipcamp operates a marketplace that lists private campsites and takes a commission on each booking; the platform was originally built by founder and CEO Alyssa Ravasio after she learned to code in 2013. The company describes itself as a "people-powered platform" that helps users find and book campsites, glampsites, and RV spots across the U.S. Hipcamp has grown to 40 employees and lists roughly 300,000 campsites across the country. The startup has attracted outside capital totaling $41.8 million to date. Management says it plans to expand internationally soon and is focused on getting more people outdoors. CEO Ravasio has expressed a preference for building a public company rather than pursuing an acquisition. Hipcamp operates a searchable campsite platform that aggregates public government and park information and lets users search by amenities, features, and activities. By manually researching government and park websites the company has built a database of more than 16,000 campsites that includes updated per-night availability information. The service is currently available only in California, and Hipcamp plans to expand to New York and Texas soon. A top priority is enabling direct bookings on the site; the company is lobbying the Department of the Interior to include an open API in the federal camping-booking contract that is due to be re-drafted. The startup raised a $2 million seed round led by O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures and Slow Ventures to fund expansion and push that booking initiative. Cofounder Alyssa Ravasio launched the product after struggling to find campsite information and positions Hipcamp as the first comprehensive search tool for camping.
