HipChat

350 Bush Street Floor 13, San Francisco, CA, 94104, United States

Overview

HipChat provides a private instant-messaging service for businesses with both web and Adobe AIR desktop clients that support group and private conversations, quick attachment sharing, notifications, and a searchable web archive. The company recently added voice and video chat as well as guest access; both features are included with paid plans. Guest access lets employees generate URLs so non-HipChat members can join group chats; guest messages and files are archived but guests can only access logs created during their invitation. For a bootstrapped startup, HipChat reports traction with “thousands” of companies using the app and over one million messages sent since its private beta. The team behind HipChat—Garret Heaton, Pete Curley, and Chris Rivers—previously founded HipCal (acquired by Plaxo in 2006) and worked on Plaxo Pulse. The company faces competition from 37signals’ Campfire and Yammer.
