Overview

Hive develops cloud-hosted AI models that automate tasks such as image, text, and audio moderation, object recognition, and other forms of unstructured data analysis. Its technology is powered by a proprietary dataset labeled by roughly 2 million global contributors who are compensated in cash or Bitcoin, enabling what the company claims is “near human level” accuracy. The platform serves about 100 enterprise customers, including Reddit, NBCUniversal, Visa, Walmart, and Anheuser-Busch InBev, and the business has grown more than 300 percent over the last year. Hive’s models currently focus on English, Spanish, French and other major languages, with plans to expand linguistic coverage and to launch contextual advertising products that do not rely on personal data. Founded in 2017, the company originated from CEO Kevin Guo’s earlier Stanford-born Q&A startup, Kiwi, before pivoting to AI APIs. The company’s technology is also applied in autonomous-systems development and back-office data processing. Hive has raised a total of $121 million to date and was valued at $2 billion following its latest funding.
