HomeAway is an Austin, Texas–based marketplace for vacation home rentals that launched in 2005. The company has been growing rapidly since launch, partly through acquisitions. Revenue has been estimated to be around $200 million with roughly $70 million in profit. Around half a billion dollars has been invested in HomeAway to date. Its valuation was set at $1.4 billion in the last financing, a $250 million raise in 2008. Google Ventures purchased existing shares in a secondary transaction rather than injecting new capital into the company. HomeAway is an Austin, Texas–based vacation home rental service that has grown primarily through acquisitions. Founded in 2005, it has acquired at least eleven vacation home rental sites, including VRBO, VacationRentals.com, Abritel.fr and OwnersDirect.co.uk. The company reports around $150 million in revenue and approximately $50 million in EBITDA. It raised a $250 million minority financing on top of $209 million previously raised over two rounds, bringing cumulative capital to roughly $459 million. At least $50 million of the new round went off the table to earlier investors and the pre-money valuation was reported around $1.15 billion. The financing was led by Technology Crossover Ventures with existing investors IVP and Redpoint Ventures participating, and VentureSource called it the largest minority investment in a U.S. Internet company in the prior eight years. TechCrunch noted the funding will likely be used for further acquisitions but questioned the valuation and potential for future acqusition-led growth, suggesting the new investors may take a loss.
