Overview

Homeis is a digital platform for foreigners to build communities around culture and share practical local knowledge. Through its app, users access social and utility-based connections, from finding friends, relationships and jobs to recommendations for local services and events. New users answer two questions—what country they are originally from and where they live now—to be welcomed into their community. All content is created and vetted by the community; communities currently serve Indians, Israelis and French in the U.S., among others. The company plans to use new funding to expand to all immigrant communities in the U.S. and globally, beginning with Mexicans and other Latino communities in the U.S. in 2019. Homeis is a culture network designed to connect immigrants with local services, peers, and information to help them adapt to a new country. The product organizes and indexes recommendations so information remains discoverable rather than disappearing in a social feed. It is built to be multilingual and localized from day one to serve distinct foreign-born communities. Founders Ran Harnevo and Hanan Laschover drew on prior experience building 5min and working at Aol. The company positions itself as focused on community and practical tasks (e.g., finding lawyers and local services) rather than general social entertainment. Harnevo has said the business model will avoid advertising and instead focus on local, physical services monetization.
