Homer Learning develops a literacy learning app aimed at children aged 3-6. The downtown-based company launched the app in August. According to an SEC filing, Homer raised $889,999 on an offered $2 million in equity. This financing is the company’s second equity round. The filing identifies the instrument as equity; the article does not report investors or operating metrics such as revenue or users. Learn With Homer is an iPad app designed to teach children ages 3 to 6 to read by combining original and classic stories, a phonics program, custom illustrations, and interactive "field trip" features. The product emphasizes phonics—teaching how words look, sound and are strung together—rather than pure sight memorization, and aligns its lessons with the Common Core. It launches with 30 free lessons and lets parents add up to three children per account, record and store up to 500 recordings and drawings, and access printable mazes, puzzles and recommended book lists to supplement learning. The app also allows parents to record their children and measure progress as they move through lessons. Founders Stephanie Dua and Iris Tang built the product from educational research and teaching practices—Dua previously led the Fund for Public Schools and served as a senior advisor at Student Achievement Partners, while Tang is a former Google engineer. Financially, the company is backed by $2.2 million in seed financing from a group of venture and angel investors.
