HotelsByDay operates a mobile marketplace that lets travelers book hotel rooms by the day, typically at roughly 40% less than overnight rates. The iOS and Android apps allow users to pick a date (including same day) and book rooms quickly; early bookings averaged about five hours and cost around $110 plus tax in New York and Chicago. Hotels list select inventory through a management portal and set pricing; HotelsByDay works on a performance-based commission model, taking around a 15% cut of rooms sold. The service launched with roughly 40 hotels available and has 60 more committed, with plans to offer about 120 hotels over the next three months and to add cities including Philadelphia, Miami, L.A., Boston and Atlanta. The founders—Yannis Moati, Nathan Stevenson and Brian Dass—co-founded the company in June of last year after observing a similar model in Europe. HotelsByDay is also working to connect with a channel manager that has access to over 400 national hotels to accelerate inventory growth and adoption.
