Overview

Houzz operates a platform that connects users with home remodeling and design professionals and hosts content and product listings. The company launched a beta in India in November and became fully available across the country in January. As part of its India push, Houzz says it now has more than 80,000 active professionals in the market. The company is partnering with Times Bridge to integrate Houzz content into The Times Group’s online properties, including the Times of India. The partnership includes an investment of undisclosed size from Times Bridge. Earlier this year Houzz raised a $400 million round at a $4 billion valuation. The move signals continued international expansion and deeper distribution in the Indian market. Houzz operates a consumer app focused on browsing curated home photos and interior design ideas while running an e-commerce marketplace for home products. The Houzz marketplace lists more than 9 million products from over 20,000 sellers. The company has launched localized versions in 14 countries outside the U.S. and continues to develop product features. In May the company rolled out a basic augmented reality mode and expects ARkit on iOS to help evolve those capabilities. Houzz targets higher-value home purchases and is positioned as a niche, vertically-focused alternative to broader discovery platforms like Pinterest. The combination of curated content and higher-value transactions underpins its business strategy and recent valuation. Houzz is an online platform for home remodeling and design offering inspiration, community advice, professional discovery and e-commerce. The company recently launched a beta Houzz Marketplace with over one million products, closing the loop for users to shop as well as find professionals and ideas. It operates two revenue channels: brand advertising (counting the majority of top home brands as partners) and Pro+, a local marketplace subscription used by thousands of subscribed professionals; both channels have not yet launched outside North America. Houzz reports over 25 million monthly unique users (90% homeowners) and more than half a million active home professionals, and maintains the largest residential design photo database with more than four million retina-quality photos. The company has expanded internationally with launches in the UK and Australia and plans launches in France and Germany this fall, and has grown its team to about 300 employees. Houzz operates an online platform that provides homeowners with inspiration for remodeling projects and connects them with designers, architects and contractors. The service reports more than 12 million unique users and grew over 450% in the last year. About 160,000 professionals are listed on the site; listings remain free, and Houzz launched a paid Pro+ tier that lets professionals pay an annual fee to be featured in selected markets and categories. Pro+ is currently available only in select metro areas, with plans to expand the service across the U.S. The company plans to use the new capital to expand its team and hire additional engineering and design talent and to add more layers and technologies to its mobile and web products. Houzz says it will focus squarely on the home remodeling market rather than branching into other real-estate areas for now. Houzz, founded by Adi Tatarko and Alon Cohen in 2009 and based in Palo Alto, offers a photo database and community for the home design market. Users can scroll through more than 60,000 full-size home decor photos and save favorite photos to personal ideabooks. Members can find design professionals in their area and send ideabooks to jumpstart projects. The site also provides design advice, tips and trends for homeowners and designers. According to the company, over 130,000 ideabooks have been created by Houzz members to date. The company has raised $2M in funding.
