1375 Broadway, New York City, NY, USA
Overview
Hubdub Ltd developed and operated FanDuel, a one-day fantasy sports game. FanDuel was launched in July 2009 and offers contests for NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL in the US. Users pay entry fees ($5–$100) to compete against other players and can win cash prizes. Hubdub was founded in 2007 and maintained offices in Edinburgh, San Francisco and New York. The company closed a $4 million Series B led by Piton Capital, with existing investors Scottish Investment Bank and Pentech Ventures also contributing. An update (January 2023) states the startup appears to be no longer in business under this name and the link was deactivated. HubDub operates a news prediction and gaming platform focused largely on US news and a partner platform that can convert any news site or blog into a prediction market. The site reports about 250,000 unique visitors and roughly 100,000 predictions traded per month. HubDub has signed partners including Reuters, The Independent and the Huffington Post, which it says drive substantially higher page impressions than typical news sites. The company recently raised funding to expand its partner base rather than relying solely on its consumer portal. The $1.2M Series A gives the Scotland-based startup an 18–24 month runway to build up content partnerships. Its main US competitor, The Industry Standard, launched in February last year and is described in the article as experiencing lacklustre growth and focusing on an in‑house portal. HubDub is a news forecaster that lets users track stories, predict outcomes and compete with other users in fantasy-style news leagues. The product is targeting US news initially to tap a large market. The company launched formally at the DEMO conference while remaining in private beta and aimed for a public launch in late January. HubDub was founded in November 2007 and is based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Nigel Eccles (previously behind Flutter, acquired by Betfair) is CEO; the team includes Tom Griffiths, Rob Jones, and Chris Stafford. The startup has closed a round of seed financing from a group of Scottish technology investors including Kevin Dorren and Ian Ritchie and is currently ad-funded, with a possible future shift to a fantasy-league monetization model.
