Overview

3D Hubs operates an automated manufacturing platform that lets users upload CAD files for an instant quote and lead time, then automatically sources a supplier to complete orders in minutes. The company began as a 3D printing community and marketplace and over the past two years shifted its focus to professional engineers and procurers. It has expanded beyond 3D printing to add CNC machining and injection molding services while improving ease of use, standardization and reliability. The platform is used by over 20,000 companies across industries including aerospace, aviation, energy, healthcare and robotics. 3D Hubs works with more than 250 suppliers and has produced over two million customized, high-precision parts to date. The company plans to use new funding to further automate quoting, design validation and smart order routing across its supplier network. 3D Hubs is an Amsterdam-headquartered online marketplace that connects those requiring 3D printing with local 3D printers via a website and an API. The platform offers real-time quotes for uploaded designs and an API that enables companies to automate short production runs and zero-inventory manufacturing. It routes orders to a network of about 33,000 3D printers worldwide and serves both hobbyists and professional product designers and manufacturers. The company has developed ordering and quotation technology that can check CAD file integrity and spot problems in around 90% of cases. In some instances 3D Hubs also supports fulfillment directly to end customers, enabling production to occur near where products will be shipped. CEO Bram de Zwart says the company aims to create a connected network of 3D printing services and expects 3D printing to drive a renaissance in local manufacturing. 3DHubs operates an online marketplace that lets users find and order 3D prints from local printer owners. The platform has processed over 30,000 prints and lists about 7,100 printers across 140 countries. The team emphasizes speed—average delivery time has fallen to 1.2 days from submission to pickup/shipping. Partnerships with Autodesk (direct print button to the API) and consumer brands like Fairphone drive roughly 40% of orders. The company plans to improve API penetration and develop e-commerce–style ordering features to simplify personalized 3D print purchases. Founders Brian Garret and Bram de Zwart, former 3D Systems employees, are leading expansion, including new offices in New York’s Brooklyn Navy Yard. 3D Hubs operates a collaborative production platform that connects owners of 3D printers with makers and customers to print customized products locally. Hubs set their own start-up price and per-cubic-centimeter material fees; the company adds a 15% commission (excluding taxes), processes orders, and collects payments. For each order the platform performs a 3D model repair check using Netfabb cloud software and automatically repairs models that are not watertight before forwarding orders to Hubs. The company says it plans to use recent funding to scale the platform globally, expand its team, sign partnerships, and grow local 3D communities worldwide. Its network has over 500 3D printers spread across 200 cities, with London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Copenhagen considered “unlocked.”
