Founded in 2006 by David Graff, who is CEO, Hudl is headquartered in Lincoln, Neb. The company announced a growth investment and plans to use the funds to drive global growth. As part of the investment, Bain Capital Tech Opportunities’ Philip Meicler will join Hudl’s Board of Directors. Hudl also announced several other recent board appointments to add leadership experience. Hudl provides a machine-learning and computer-vision powered platform that offers video analysis and coaching tools for sports teams. Coaches can upload footage of games, practices, and opponents, break down videos, add voice clips and text feedback, and deliver video and notes to athletes. Athletes can build highlight reels and promote themselves to recruiters. The company said it will use new capital to continue developing the platform and to expand its business reach. Hudl was launched in 2006 and is based in Lincoln, Nebraska. It currently serves high schools, NFL, NBA and NHL teams, as well as youth teams across 20 different sports. Hudl provides a SaaS platform that lets coaches record or upload game and practice video, add text, drawing and audio annotations, and share clips and highlight reels with players and recruiters on mobile. The product supports many sports and hosts highlight videos that players can post to social networks or send to college recruiters; Hudl also runs video pre-roll ads and licenses clips to outlets like ESPN and Bleacher Report. The company reports roughly 3.5 million users across 40 countries, about 1 billion video clips, and generated $30 million in revenue in 2014 (roughly $30 million spent by 100,000 teams last year); it charges about $1,400 annually per high school or college team. Hudl was started in 2006 by University of Nebraska–Lincoln alumni and has grown to about 230 employees across four offices. It has made acquisitions including UberSense and ReplayAnalysis to expand into individual-athlete tools and professional-club markets. Management says it will hire more sales reps to sign up teams, pursue opportunistic acquisitions, and is open to going public if it makes sense while saying it is not looking to be acquired.
