Overview

Hummingbird offers a specialized CRM-style workflow platform that brings together disparate data sources and risk signals to help financial crime investigators manage high caseloads. Its product is targeted at banks, fintechs and crypto exchanges; clients named include Stripe, Coinbase, Evolve Bank & Trust and Etsy. CEO Joe Robinson said investigators often handle 100 to 200 cases a week and cited the less than 1% success rate of global AML controls as motivation for unifying raw formats across systems. The company has a 35-person team and a presence in seven countries. It plans to launch in the U.K. early next year and to expand further into Europe and Asia, while prioritizing design iteration for its next growth phase. Financially, Hummingbird recently closed a $30 million Series B, bringing total funding to $41.8 million. Hummingbird provides anti-money-laundering (AML) compliance technology through a case management, investigation, and reporting platform plus an API for validating and filing regulatory reports. Its modular platform works across data sources and teams, and its data organization is designed for machine learning. Customers include major financial institutions with trillions in assets under management as well as fintechs such as Brex, Upgrade, and Etsy. Hummingbird says its products have driven 80–90% efficiency gains in investigation and reporting workflows. The company will use the new funding to advance technologies for improved inter-institutional communication and structured datasets for machine learning, with attention to ethics. It also plans to expand into transaction disputes and consumer protections in lending and to enter the European market starting with Ireland and the U.K. Hummingbird provides banks, payments companies and other financial institutions with an AML platform that leverages machine learning and investigative capabilities to fight financial crime. The platform includes interactive pattern visualization, automatic location intelligence, time-sequence narratives of customer behaviors, and relationship mapping between investigation subjects. It offers built-in collaboration tools and is designed for fast deployment, taking a minute or two to set up with no integration required. The company is led by Joe Robinson, Jesse Reiss, Ryan Gerard, Matt Van Buskirk and Jo Ann Barefoot. Its technology is already available in the United States, and pilots in other countries will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. In October 2018 Hummingbird raised $3M in funding.
