Founded in 2022 in Aix-en-Provence by Anaïs Bach and Damien Ricordeau, Hummingbirds provides the technical capital and in-house ESG expertise needed to bring greenfield restoration projects to the point where they can issue verified, tradable carbon credits. Its current portfolio includes a 300-hectare mangrove restoration effort in Kenya, sustainable timber and conservation activities on Mount Kei in Uganda, and efficient cookstove distribution programs in Benin and Uganda. By positioning itself upstream, the company aims to remedy the supply bottleneck of high-quality, bankable carbon projects and de-risk them for long-term corporate and sovereign off-takers. Hummingbirds commits to selling credits only to buyers with verified science-based decarbonisation targets and targets 250,000 beneficiaries, half of whom are women, through its projects’ social co-benefits. The platform also plans to leverage the EDFI Carbon Sinks guarantee to enhance transparency and provide a financial safety net for EU-backed climate investments. Its focus on tangible land-based restoration seeks to avoid the regulatory pitfalls that recently shook Kenya’s carbon market, underscoring a strategy centered on credibility and measurable impact.
